MV Agusta has its roots in a northern Italian aircraft company established in 1923 by the Sicilian Count Giovanni Agusta, who designed and built his first aircraft in 1907. After his death in 1927, his son Domenico diversified the company in motorcycles.
World War II saw brisk aviation activity for Italy aligned with Axis power. BMW and Piaggio were also aircraft engineering and manufacturing companies (as well as Kawasaki), but the treaty that ended the war prohibited Italy and Japan from continuing their aircraft programs, which meant that all this defense engineering potential of aircraft would be refocused on motorcycles. So the Allies won the war, but the Axis powers made all the best motorcycles…
