Francisco “Paco” Bulto, road racing enthusiast and engineer, helped train Montesa in 1944. But the motorcycle company didn’t want to spend money on racing, so Bulto finally left in 1958 to start his own. company, Bultaco.

Several staff from Montesa’s development department joined Bultaco as the company began building its first bicycle, a 125 two-stroke single-cylinder, the Tralla.

A Super Sport (TSS) version was entered in the 1960 Isle of Man Ultra Lightweight TT, ridden by John Grace. The technical issues that resulted in a DNF did not dampen Bulto’s enthusiasm for the sport.

A batch of racing bikes were built for the 1961 season, and seven were entered in the 1961 Ultra Lightweight TT. Ralph Rensen finished sixth, the first two-stroke rider behind five factory Honda’s, and only one Bultaco. failed to complete!
