DUNCAN, OK (KSWO) – Spring is here and that means prom season is just around the corner, but a church in Duncan wants to make sure everyone has the opportunity to attend in style.
Duncan’s First Baptist Church has ball gowns, shoes, handbags, and jewelry that anyone can borrow on their big day.
They have hundreds of dresses, in a variety of colors and sizes, to make sure they have a dress for everyone. All the dresses were donated by members of the community, so borrowing them is completely free. The church even has a partnership with a local dry cleaner, so you won’t even have to pay to have it cleaned before you return.
Kendall Diaz is in charge of the prom dress program at First Baptist Church and she loves being able to make some of the dreams of local girls to go to prom come true.
“Prom is a big deal, it’s a big deal. And getting the right dress is a big deal and sometimes you just don’t have the funds to make it happen. We are able to provide the service to make sure that people have the graduation party, have something that they can enjoy and have memories of it, ”Diaz said.
The church is doing all it can to get the girls ready for the ball and really only has one goal.
The First Baptist Church wants to make sure that every girl who wants to go to the ball has the opportunity. You just walk in, try on one of their hundreds of dresses, grab matching shoes and handbag, grab some earrings, and you’ll be good to go in no time.
Diaz says none of this would be possible without the community’s donation of dresses, but says it’s not something new to the Duncan community.
“It doesn’t really surprise me, because our community comes together a lot just to give things to people in need,” Diaz said.
Diaz says being able to join the community by giving means a lot to her.
“It makes me so happy to be able to help them this way, and I send a lot of girls home happy to have found a dress and the moms too. It takes a load off them too and that’s so great for me.” , said Diaz.
Diaz says that if anyone at home has their old dress right in the closet, she hopes they will pay it back and donate it to make someone else’s dreams come true.
The church, located at 901 W Ash Ave, will host an event for girls to borrow dresses on Saturday, April 2 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
If anyone wants to donate or borrow a dress, they can call the church at 580-252-5885 to make an appointment.
