Bosch launches new eBike products and features, including new ABS

Bosch eBike Systems is showcasing eBike innovations for model year 2023 at Eurobike (July 13-17 in Frankfurt), including a new anti-lock braking system (ABS). Improper braking is one of the main causes of bicycle accidents.

The front wheel brake of a bicycle is crucial for a short braking distance. But many people avoid using it because they are afraid of falling due to the high braking effect. The Bosch eBike ABS specifically counteracts this by significantly reducing the risk of falling or being thrown over the handlebars.

Studies by Bosch Accident Research have shown that up to 29% of all accidents involving pedelecs could be reduced or completely avoided each year if all pedelecs were equipped with reliable ABS. The new Bosch eBike ABS significantly reduces the risk of falling or being thrown over the handlebars.

More than 40 years ago, Bosch introduced the world’s first production-ready ABS system to the market. Bosch has been manufacturing anti-lock braking systems for motorcycles since 1995 and launched the world’s first ABS for e-bikes in 2018.

With the new ABS, Bosch eBike Systems now presents the world’s smallest ABS developed on the basis of motorcycle technology. This means that for the first time, eBike manufacturers can equip all types of eBikes with Bosch’s optimized brake assist technology.

The control unit of the new Bosch eBike ABS is 77% smaller and 55% lighter than its predecessor and blends discreetly into the design of the eBike thanks to its integration into the entire system.

Bosch offers different modes for the new eBike ABS, each of which is optimally designed for the braking requirements of different eBike types and surfaces.

Owners of an eCargo bike with ABS Cargo benefit from faster, safer and more precise braking even when carrying a full load. ABS Touring is ideal for riding the eCity bike around town, where road changes, crosswalks and traffic lights are an integral part of every ride. Or for weekend excursions in the countryside with the eBike trekking. ABS Allroad has been specially developed for easy off-road riding so that mountain bikers can pursue their passion and enjoy a more carefree and safer ride on gravel and forest paths.

The ABS Trail mode, which was developed in collaboration with athletes, is more aimed at sporty eBikers who are always looking for new challenges on demanding trails and difficult terrain. ABS Trail helps them ride with more foresight, control and focus in surprising situations, like a steeper grade or blind corner. This way, eBikers can further refine their riding technique and increase their performance on the trails, while enjoying a safer ride. When riding on gravel paths or asphalt roads, they can simply switch from ABS Trail to ABS Allroad in the eBike Flow app or using the Kiox 300 display.

Recent braking data can also be retrieved using the Kiox 300. This way, eBikes can see and analyze their braking distance, or braking time, in order to gradually improve their braking behavior on different surfaces.

ABS activates automatically as soon as you start pedaling. Two basic functions in particular, which make the braking and riding experience much safer, are crucial for the effectiveness of Bosch eBike ABS.

For example, the front wheel anti-lock braking feature automatically regulates brake pressure by continuously monitoring wheel speed, preventing the wheels from locking up when braking. The sensitive braking behavior increases control and stability, especially on slippery surfaces. The rear wheel lift control reduces the risk of the rear wheel lifting off on high grip surfaces. Since it reduces the likelihood of being thrown over the handlebars, this feature contributes significantly to safer and accident-free riding.

The new Bosch eBike ABS with brake components from MAGURA will be available from summer 2022. The available ABS mode depends on the respective eBike category defined by the bicycle manufacturer. Potential customers should check whether the new ABS eBike is installed when purchasing an eBike or contact their specialist dealer, as it cannot be retrofitted.

Other new technologies and features introduced by Bosch at Eurobike include:

  • The additional theft protection eBike Alarm allows you to park your eBike safely.

  • Cargo bike riders can now also enjoy the benefits of the smart system. Bosch eBike Systems ensures more safety and comfort with the new ABS Cargo and Cargo mode.

  • In the new Auto mode, the assistance provided by the ride is automatically adapted to the environmental conditions, for example in the event of a headwind or uphill, without the pedelecs having to exert more effort or change the riding mode. With the new ABS Trail mode, the Hill Hold function and other new products and features, Bosch eBike Systems guarantees even more riding pleasure on the trails.
