Australian man found dead in ditch – Expatriate in Indonesia

An Australian man known as Keith Thomas Coughlan was found dead kneeling in a ditch at Jalan Bumbak, Banjar Anyar Kelod, Kerobokan Village, North Kuta, Bali on Sunday July 24, 2022 morning at around 5.10 a.m. local time from Bali.

“He died in a ditch, probably out of control because where we found him there were collision marks on the wall of the gutter,” said the head of the public relations section of Badung police, the first police inspector I Ketut Sudana, on Sunday.

According to the information gathered, seven bottles of beer were found at the scene of the crime. Based on this discovery, Coughlan was suspected of being heavily intoxicated.

Coughlan was found wearing a black t-shirt, dark blue cropped jeans and black casual shoes. He was killed when he was hit by a motorcycle.

His position was under a motorcycle and at the time of the incident there were no witnesses who saw him, so the victim was not rescued, explained Sudana.

He added that Coughlan’s body was first discovered by a resident of Banjar Anyar Kelod, Kerobokan Kelod village, named I Wayan Sumertha around 5:10 a.m. local Bali time. Sumertha was passing the stage from the west when he saw something wrong.

However, Sumertha said he did not know if the man was alive or dead when he was discovered. He went on to explain that he hadn’t dared to deal after finding two legs with a motorbike in the ditch.

“At that time, I didn’t dare say whether he was dead or not. I didn’t dare, I just looked at him with a flashlight and then I didn’t see him a second time. I better report it right away,” he said.

Shortly after finding the body in the ditch, he contacted Banjar Anyar Kelod officer Wayan Rudita. After several checks, the officer then contacted North Kuta Police.

At around 6:30 a.m., police officers from the northern sector of Kuta arrived at the scene. Shortly after, an ambulance from the Badung Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency arrived on the scene and took Coughland’s body to Sanglah Central General Hospital in Denpasar.
