An 89-year-old motorcycle enthusiast from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, received an invitation from the mayor as part of his latest official engagement.

Jean Underwood, who lives at Bridge House Care Home, was delighted when she received a request from the outgoing mayor, Cllr. Charlie Birks, to have tea with her – as his last official engagement.

The mayor, who is the first since 1953 to sit for two consecutive years, first met Jean when he came to the house to show a film about local history.

Jean shared his Abingdon story and photos of his family with him. This was then followed by a special invitation to the Mayor’s Christmas Ball which Jean attended along with six other residents and members of the home’s care team.

Lifestyle Director Chantelle Merritt said: “They seem to have formed such a special bond. He has been a wonderful mayor and a true friend of the house, attending many of our events and genuinely caring about Jean and the other residents.

Local history aside, Jean and Charlie share a love of motorcycles and to Jean’s delight he arrived for tea on his Suzuki GSX-S 1000 motorcycle.

Cllr. Birks said, “Motorcycle enthusiasts are always drawn together – I think it’s our thirst for a living.
